John Waller is a senior at Tufts University majoring in Biomedical Engineering. He is originally from the Bronx, NYC and is of Trinidadian and African-American descent. His journey at Tufts commenced through the Voices diversity fly-in program, which sparked a profound interest in the academic excellence and community engagement found here. Following that, John was chosen to be a Bridge to Engineering Success (B.E.S.T.) scholar, a program that gave him, and students like him, the tools to succeed and lead at Tufts.
Throughout his tenure at Tufts, John has demonstrated exemplary leadership and dedication to service. He has held various leadership positions within student organizations, including the Tufts Black Student Union and the all-male vocal group focusing on music of the African diaspora, Tufts S-Factor, where he holds the role of president. During his Junior year, he served as a peer leader for the Africana. Through this, he helped facilitate the pre-orientation program for Black first-years, S.Q.U.A.D., and he dedicated himself to guiding and mentoring a cohort of 12 students throughout their academic journey, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported in their new environment. Additionally, John serves as a trusted Resident Assistant, providing invaluable guidance and support to fellow students navigating university life.
Outside of his academic commitments, John is deeply entrenched in fostering a sense of community and belonging. As the Vice Polemarch of the Theta Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated, he actively cultivates an inclusive environment where members can thrive and contribute positively to society. Beyond his organizational involvements, John finds solace and joy in his hobbies, including music, fellowship, and writing, which serve as outlets for self expression and rejuvenation. If you can’t find him in any of those spaces, you can find John at the Circulation Desk in the Edward Ginn Library, enriching the academic experience of students at the Fletcher School of Law.
