Javier Macaya, A91, A22P

STATEMENT:

Ever since I walked on the Medford campus as a freshman in September 1987, I have felt a strong sense of belonging and gratitude to Tufts.  These feelings have fueled my continued involvement and support of the University in the ways that I have been able to.

My connections to the school run deep.  I am a member of the class of ’91, a parent of the class of ’22 and have two sisters who graduated in ’90 and ’96.  I have sought opportunities to be involved and supportive of Tufts for over twenty years. Firstly, I became closely associated with the Institute of Global Leadership (IGL) in 2004 where I first supported internships throughout the world for students, the “Macaya Fellows”. In 2007, I joined forces with my fellow classmate Angelos Metaxa to found and fund EMPOWER, a social entrepreneurship-focused program at IGL, at which time we both also joined the advisory board of IGL.  I later joined the International Advisory Board where I have served for well over a decade and remain an active emeritus board member. More recently, I joined the advisory board of the Tisch College.  Finally, I am a part of the Tufts Admissions Network and interview Tufts applicants.

As a student, I graduated with a degree in Quantitative Economics.  I spent a great deal of time at The Tufts Daily, where I was the executive business director of the newspaper for two years.   I give Tufts immense credit for how it prepared and positioned me for my subsequent professional career in the world of finance.  In the past thirty-four years, I have worked at JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, James D Wolfensohn and, most significantly, founded and led Athelera LLC, an international M&A and strategic advisory firm focused on North and South America and Europe.  Throughout this time, I have supported as many students as I could, by enabling and funding internship opportunities and providing career guidance.  This year I have been deeply honored by the Tufts Alumni Council with an Alumni Career Services Award.  If I am selected as a Trustee, I would make student and alumni career advancement, what President Kumar refers to as “life design,” an important area of my focus and energy.

Tufts not only offered me an education but also gifted me with an opportunity to make lifelong friends throughout the world, both as a student as well as through the myriads of alumni and university administrators and educators that I have met through my subsequent involvement with the school.  I have a mission to encourage alumni to be supportive and involved members of the Tufts family and am grateful to so many of them for supporting the initiatives that I have been a part of as well as many others involving the school.  In the most recent Giving Tuesday, I was proud to partner with Trustee Jennifer Selendy and Tisch Board Member Matt Bai to launch an IGL challenge campaign that raised a record of over $100,000 with the participation of over 180 alumni donors. Our campaign was instrumental towards unleashing an additional $50,000 challenge gift for the Tisch School.

I am a Spanish citizen with deep connections to Europe, the United States and Latin America.  I am the parent of seven children and stepchildren ranging in age from 9 to 25 who keep me closely connected to education at all levels.  After spending close to 35 years living in the United States, I currently split my time between the United Kingdom, Spain, Morocco and the United States.  Another passionate area of personal focus is in promoting Tufts internationally as I often feel that the University’s perception abroad lags its perception in the US and is not representative of the elite caliber of the University.

It would be an honor and a privilege to continue to advance the interests of Tufts University as an Alumni Trustee and I humbly ask for your support by voting for my candidacy.
