Arielle Ortega, A25

Hometown: Lafayette, New Jersey

Major: Community Health

Arielle is a senior from rural Lafayette, New Jersey, majoring in Community Health. She comes from a diverse Jewish and Native American background, which has influenced her focus in her Community Health studies. Throughout her major, she has focused on Indigenous/Native American healthcare issues, bringing light to an underserved and overlooked population.

She joined the staff at the Tufts Indigenous Center when it first opened in March 2022, and is the last of the original student interns. She is thrilled, knowing she has helped facilitate a flourishing community that did not exist a mere 4 years ago. Arielle was also an active member of the Indigenous Students’ Organization at Tufts from 2021-2024, and helped plan the annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration. Her passion for amplifying indigenous voices impacted her decision to work with Native American LifeLines of Boston (NAL) in the Spring of 2024, where she helped increase their services and free hygiene product program to local universities. Throughout this internship, she increased their connections from four schools to fourteen, furthering health access to indigenous college students. Additionally, she and NAL met with staff at Senator Warren’s office to discuss the most pressing Native American health issues today.

This long-standing interest in healthcare influenced her to take the Emergency Care class during her first semester at Tufts. In Summer 2022, she worked at her local hospital as an EMT, and joined Tufts University Emergency Medical Services (TEMS) in Fall 2022. Working up to 36 hours a week as a volunteer on TEMS, Arielle served as a
diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) officer from 2022-2023, and now works as a preceptor on TEMS. Throughout her position as DEI officer, she helped jumpstart the TECC scholarship, aimed at reducing the financial burden of the current enrollment cost of the Emergency Care class offered at Tufts. Arielle also TA’s the Emergency Care class, helping Tufts students along on their journey to become EMTs.

Growing up on a farm, Arielle knew she wanted to continue her equestrian endeavors in college. She joined the Tufts Equestrian Team her freshman Fall. She held multiple positions over her four years on the team, having served as the merchandise coordinator, fundraising chair, and now as a Co-Captain.

In her free time you can find Arielle reading, painting, embroidering, and hanging out with her best friend and sister, Chaya.

After graduation, Arielle will be attending Tufts University School of Medicine for their combined MD/MPH program, and hopes to combine her practice of medicine with the influential backbone of community and public health.
