Louise Bond is a senior from Evanston, IL studying Sociology and Civic Studies with a minor in Spanish. In her time at Tufts, Louise has been a civic leader, especially in prison education justice work. From her first year, she has been a leader for the Tufts Petey Greene Program, which supports the academic goals of currently and formerly incarcerated students through volunteer tutoring programs at local carceral facilities. In addition to planning on-campus events about the carceral state and the transformative power of education, she has also helped expand the number of tutors at Tufts through her promotion of the program. She has also been an integral part of the Tufts University Prison Initiative at Tisch College (TUPIT), where she has TA’d courses including Reimagining Reentry, Sociology of Law, Spanish 2, as well as co-facilitating LSAT tutoring sessions for the incarcerated Tufts students at MCI-Concord and MCI-Shirley. As part of her work for TUPIT, she has also been a Research Assistant for 3 years for the Tufts Education Reentry Network, or MyTERN program. Louise spearheaded the research interview project with the formerly incarcerated MyTERN students to qualitatively capture their experience with the program and reentry, completing 100+ of one-on-one interviews herself. As part of this work, she was a featured panelists at the 13th annual National Conference on Higher Education in Prison and co-wrote an article titled “College After Incarceration” in Contexts Magazine. Louise has also been a trailblazer for the Pre-Law community at Tufts. As President of the Pre-Law Society, she has expanded access to opportunities and resources for students considering a career path in law.
Louise has also been a student leader in Tufts’ only sketch comedy group for gender minorities in comedy, TFL Comedy, for all her time at Tufts. For the last 2 years, Louise has been a member of the Sociology Student Advisory Board, which works in tandem with the Sociology faculty to amplify student voice in the department and support students.
Louise will continue her work with TUPIT after graduation and apply to law school, where she will study to become a criminal defense attorney and criminal justice policymaker.
