Distinguished Achievement Award: Kelly Henning, M85

Dr. Kelly Henning leads the public health program at Bloomberg Philanthropies. After receiving her medical degree from Tufts University in 1985, she completed internal medicine training at the University of Pennsylvania, and received her epidemiology training in the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the United States Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Henning served as a fellow in infectious diseases at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Before joining Bloomberg Philanthropies in January 2007, Dr. Henning was an associate professor in infectious disease at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and served as the hospital epidemiologist at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Hospital followed by an appointment as the Director of the newly formed Division of Epidemiology at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene from 2003 to 2006.

Projects under her direction today include the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, a now 20-year, more than $1 billion global program aimed at curbing the tobacco epidemic in low- and middle-income countries; the Food Policy Program, a global, multi-year effort to support public health policies aimed at promoting healthy food environments; the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety, a commitment to reduce road traffic deaths among high-risk populations; and the Data for Health initiative, which to date has enabled 81 countries to vastly improve public health data collection.

Dr. Henning recently joined the Board of Trustees for Vital Strategies; a nonprofit organization focused on supporting scalable solutions to leading causes of death around the world.
