Don’t miss this rare opportunity to to get an insider’s look at this local academic gem.  Established in 1891, Mass Maritime is the second oldest state maritime academy in the United States. The college has been preparing men and women for careers on land and sea for more than 100 years offerng undergraduate degrees in maritime related fields, as well as graduate degrees and professional studies. Graduates can also earn a Merchant Marine Officer’s license and a Naval Officer’s Commission (optional).

Following a buffet lunch, cadets will give walking tours of the campus.  If possible we will tour the TS Kennedy, MMA’s 540’ training ship on which cadets experience Sea Term, an approximately 52 day training voyage to either the Caribbean or Mediterranean. During Sea Term a cadet will rotate through class and laboratory training at sea, ships operations including deck and engine watches, maintenance and emergency drills.

A tour high point will be a visit to the school’s shipboard bridge simulators.  Among them, the state-of-the-art navigation and ship handling full mission simulator with a 360 degree horizontal field of view while the Transas tugboat simulator provides the users with excellent tools for both ship assistant training tasks and professional training in tug and barge operations.

Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald USMS is the President of the Academy. Upon his graduation from the academy in 1985, McDonald pursued an engineering career and earned a Master of Science in management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  He returned to his alma mater in 1995.  He has served in various roles of increasing responsibility before assuming the role of President in 2015 .
