In the pre-dawn darkness of April 19, 1775, a column of British troops marched toward Concord to capture stores of weapons and ammunition hidden by the colonists. In Lexington, they encountered a determined group of militiamen, engaged in gunfire, and killed eight citizens, who became the first casualties of the American War for Independence. The British moved on to Concord, where they met fierce resistance from several hundred locals from surrounding towns, whose numbers swelled throughout the day. The British fled for their lives on the retreat to Boston, suffering heavy casualties.
