In 1859, abolitionist John Brown was chained to a chair in a jail awaiting execution for his infamous raid on Harpers Ferry. Today a bust of John Brown, carved at the time of his death, is a treasured part of the permanent art collection at Tufts. The relationship among Brown, a damaged bust, and Tufts makes for a fascinating saga.

Join Laura McDonald, Manager of Collections and Registrar, on June 9 to hear the chronicle of the Tufts-John Brown connection and what happened to Brown’s nose, along with intriguing stories about other special pieces in the collection.

A born sleuth, Laura knows each piece in the collection intimately. This bust is one of over 2,500 works of art in the Tufts collection, each with its own story. Laura has selected several works of art and will tell an engaging tale about the piece itself and how it made its way to Tufts.

Laura McDonald is the Manager of Collections and Registrar for the Tufts University Permanent Collection.  Laura is responsible for the  storage, care and maintenance of the 2500+ pieces of art that reflect the history of Tufts University and the interests of its alumni. She has been at Tufts since 2007 and was previously the Collections Manager at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, CT, and Curatorial Assistant at the Danforth Museum of Art.
