Leadership and Endowment Gifts: Enhancing Tufts’ Academic Mission

Alumni and friends partner with Tufts philanthropically in many ways. In addition to making annual gifts, donors also have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to a particular initiative, such as financial aid and programs that enhance the student experience; research and innovation; support for faculty, including endowed professorships; and investments in top-notch facilities, such as classrooms, labs, clinics, and performance spaces.

Leadership gifts to the endowment are particularly vital to Tufts. When you give to the endowment, you create an enduring legacy at Tufts—one that will benefit students and faculty for generations to come and that builds on Tufts’ integrity and reputation. Thanks to generous philanthropy and strategic, prudent investments, Tufts’ endowment totals $1.9 billion as of June 30, 2018.

Endowed gifts strengthen Tufts by:

  • Combatting rising tuition costs and giving Tufts the resources to increase access to education for the best students across the globe. Financial aid remains the single greatest challenge facing all of Tufts’ schools, and endowed scholarships ensure that we can maintain our legacy of diversity and inclusion.
  • Helping the university attract and retain outstanding faculty. Endowed named professorships, for instance, offer prestige and recognition to leading scholars and researchers at Tufts who invigorate the entire academic enterprise with their expertise.
  • Giving the university the flexibility and freedom to seize every opportunity and continue to support innovation and discovery in all their forms. Endowed centers such as the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life and other cutting-edge research programs further our mission to inspire a world of good.

Endowed gifts exist in perpetuity—that is, when the gift is invested, the principal value is never touched, and an established percentage of the income is distributed annually for use by the university. Over time, each gift grows in value, providing increasing resources in future years. Gifts to the endowment enable the university to plan for the future with confidence.

In short, the sustained benefit to Tufts far exceeds the original value of your gift. The long-term impact of your support is immeasurable. For this reason, many donors choose to name their endowments—as a personal legacy or in honor or memory of beloved family, friends, or mentors.
